Checking In: Marine Troon

A relaxing twenty-four hours at Marine Troon, a destination hotel on the Ayrshire Coast.

My stay with Marine Troon was complimentary but I was under no obligation to write a blog post. As always, all content and opinions are my own.

Marine Troon

With views of Royal Troon’s 18th Hole, Marine Troon is a dream for golfers. As someone with zero interest in golf (bar a golf-obsessed husband), I can confirm it’s also a dream for those who love luxury, sea air, good food, Victorian architecture and maximalist design. Newly refurbished and only recently reopened, the Marine Troon dates back to 1894 and is now decorated in a whimsical mix of Victorian and seaside-inspired design. There are plenty of cosy, welcoming nooks to settle down with a book (and a killer cocktail menu at the bar!) and the hotel spa is a welcome bit of entertainment for non-golfers. I loved the brass lamps, wooden chandeliers and pool table in the public area - though nothing can really compete with the stunning view out to sea.

The Room

The Marine Troon has 89 bedrooms, all newly decorated with striking seaweed print wallpaper in shades of blue and cream. The beds are plush, large and oh-so comfortable and my room had the most magnificent turret seating area overlooking Royal Troon golf course and out to sea. The vintage phone, Nespresso machine, well-stocked mini bar and large TV all add to the luxurious feel and I absolutely loved the gorgeous dark green bathroom, although the absence of a bath was disappointing at first - the luxury double-size shower more than made up for it.

Food & Drink

The hotel has two options for food: The Seal bar (named after the first hole at Royal Troon) and The Rabbit restaurant (named after, you guessed it, the 17th.) After a light but lovely lunch at The Seal (which is dog-friendly for anyone with four-legged friends!) I had a wonderful three-course dinner at The Rabbit. Two of the courses were so delicious, I forgot to photograph them in my eagerness to eat! The menu focuses on local Scottish produce and dishes - but with a modern twist. I can highly recommend the seafood at this restaurant - the scallops were some of the best I’ve ever had. Breakfast the next morning was also served in The Rabbit and had a lovely selection of pastries, fresh fruit and juices as well as the usual fare of eggs, bacon and, of course, haggis.

How To Get There

Troon is roughly 45 minutes drive from Glasgow and 2hrs from Edinburgh. There are regular bus services to Troon (there’s a bus stop near the entrance to the hotel) and a train service runs to Troon Station, approximately 1 mile from the hotel.

Good to know

  • The Marine Troon is dog-friendly and the hotel will provide dog beds and bowls. Four-legged friends are welcome in the Seal bar and outdoor areas.

  • There is a spa with a pool and jacuzzi, so pack your swimmers.

What’s Nearby

Troon beach is just a short walk from the hotel, right across the golf course. For golf lovers, there are several championship courses nearby, including the famous Royal Troon.
